1. Pre-Testing & Device Selection

• Skip the online lookalikes: Avoid cheap, unbranded digital monitors with no testing pedigree.

• Verify certifications: Choose a short-term kit or continuous monitor certified by NRPP or NRSB.

• Confirm calibration: Ensure electronic monitors used for official tests carry active factory calibration certificates.

 

2. Closed-House Conditions (Crucial for Accuracy)

• Shut all windows: Keep all windows closed for at least 12 hours before and during the entire test.

• Limit door usage: Keep exterior doors closed except for normal, brief entry and exit.

• Run HVAC normally: Leave heating and cooling systems on, but turn off whole-house fans or window units.

 

3. Proper Placement

• Choose the lowest livable level: Test the basement or the lowest floor used regularly by family.

• Maintain proper height: Elevate the test kit or monitor 2 to 7 feet off the floor (breathing zone).

• Avoid drafts and heat: Keep the device away from vents, fans, fireplaces, direct sunlight, and windows.

• Keep clear of moisture: Do not test in high-humidity areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms.

 

4. Post-Mitigation Maintenance

• Verify the installation: Ensure an EPA-evaluated monitor like the Safety Siren Pro Series 4 is plugged in near the system.

• Check the U-tube manometer: Inspect the liquid gauge on your mitigation pipe monthly to confirm the fan is drawing suction.

• Retest every two years: Perform a routine, certified follow-up test to ensure shifting soil or fan degradation hasn't compromised your safety.
